UI development project

This project presents the design for a user interface of an autonomous vehicle. We have proposed a tablet device would be used as the main interface of the vechile. All functionalities of the autonomous vehicle are controlled via the proposed tablet. Various evaluation methods were used throught the design process to direct the design decisions in the final prototype. Once the tablet is implemented into the car it must continuously be updated to provide the changing needs of the user. Check out the prototype screenshots below.

Overview of design descions

This study has presented a design for a an interface system and suggest basic interior design for a futuristic vehicle, under the premise of that the vehicle is capable of self-driving and has no steering wheels or pedals, therefore the proposed “smart car” interface system also acts as the main control centre of the car.

Personas and scenarios were constructed in order to define the functionalities to focus on the most. Methods such as cooperative evaluation, storyboarding and thinking aloud were used to assist in idea creation and identify the necessary functionalities. An experiment was conducted to determine a preferred layout. Muliptle wireframes and prototypes of varying levels of fidelity were produced during the design process.

The final proposed design involves 360-degree rotatable front seats with tablets attached to their armrests. The tablets provides control options to the vehicle as well as many other functions a smartphone would provide. Information is displayed on monitors situated on the interior side of the doors or on the front dashboard. Fingerprint or facial recognition system is employed for security. Inbuilt sensors such as motion, speed sensors will be used to ensure the safety of the driving. The final prototype (displayed above) was created using AdobeXD.
